Pakistan Army Gifts Six Horses to Sri Lanka Military Academy

Six horses gifted to the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) at Diyatalawa by the Pakistan Army have been formally received on Monday at the Lake View Equestrian Centre in Hokandara. The horses donated by the Pakistan Army in response to a request by the Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya will undergo quarantine procedures before they were to be used for equestrian training. Brigadier Indunil Ranasinghe, Commandant of SLMA, on behalf of the Commander of the Army, received the gift from Colonel Sheharyar Pervez Butt, Defence Attaché of Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka. The Army Commander had brought the need to have horses for equestrian training for the military graduates to the attention of his Pakistani counterpart, when the latter visited the passing out parade at the SLMA in Diyatalawa, since absence of equestrian training in the curricula at SLMA remains a gap, due to non-availability of horses.

Pakistan Army Maintain Dominance in National Taekwondo

Pakistan Army continued their dominance on the second day in the 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo Championship here at the Liaquat Gymnasium. Pool fights of 4 X Khyorugi male/female events in fin and fly weight categories were completed. DG PSB Syed Amir Hamza Gillani was the chief guest on the occasion and distributed medals among the top players. Army clinched three gold medals on second day of the championship while Railways earned one gold. In fin weight male category, Ghazanfar Ali of Army claimed gold, Hidayat Ullah of Fata silver and Abdul Raheem Sindh clinched bronze. In fly weight male category, Taufeeq of Railways received gold, Umar of Army silver and Nadeem of Sindh bronze, in fin weight female category, Kiran Bano of Army notched up gold, Tanzeela of Sindh silver and Simra of Railways bronze, in fly weight female category, Maham Aftab of Army grabbed gold, Faiza of Railways silver and Marrayum of HEC bronze. Funeral Prayer Held for Pakistani Peacekeeper Martyred in Congo

Pakistan Army peacekeeper, Subedar Tanveer Hussain, who was killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo on May 7, was buried in his native village in Chakwal on Tuesday. Hussain was killed in a gunfight with a rebel group that ambushed the convoy of a UN peacekeeping mission, according to a press release from the Inter Services Public Relations. A large number of military personnel attended the funeral.Pakistan has demanded an investigation in to the attack. Local officials had said last week that at least two people connected to the attack had been arrested. The Pakistan Army has been partaking in UN peacekeeping missions since 1960, and more than 8,000 Pakistani soldiers are currently deployed in such missions all over the world. 135 Pakistani peacekeepers have been killed in action to date.

Gen Kayani Stresses Team Work to Ensure Security on Polling Day

Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Tuesday directed the army, civilian law enforcement forces and intelligence agencies to work as a team and implement an integrated security plan to ensure law and order during the May 11 general elections. Presiding over a meeting of top security officials at the 5 Corps headquarters in Karachi, by Sindh Chief Secretary Muhammad Ijaz Chaudhry, Commander Corps 5 Lt. General Muhammad Ijaz Chaudhry, Director General Rangers Sindh Major General Rizwan Akhtar, IGP Sindh Shahid Nadeem Baloch, Sindh Home Secretary Muhammad Waseem, heads of Intelligence Bureau, other intelligence agencies and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials. General Kayani reviewed the election security arrangements in Karachi and in the rest of Sindh during the meeting wherein the Sindh Police chief, DG Rangers, Sindh, and Commander Corps 5 briefed him on the deployment of military and civilian forces to ensure security during the May 11 polls. Pakistan Army would not go inside Polling Stations: ISPR

As already informed by the Election Commission of Pakistan and the government that army troops will not be present inside polling stations, the army will be in the area as a quick reaction force and its deployment would be for ensuring a secured environment, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj Gen Asim Salim Bajwa said on Tuesday. He said this in a statement after a detailed briefing to Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on the security plan for the general election at a high level meeting. Maj Gen Bajwa told the media that the Commander 5 Corps, Sindh Rangers Director General, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, IG, head of Intelligence Bureau in Sindh and heads of intelligence organisations attended the meeting. The naval operations must be bold, innovative, pragmatic and yet safe and efficient, said Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Mohammad Asif Sandila on the occasion of the Pakistan Navy’s Annual Safety Review on Thursday. Sandila was the chief guest at the Pakistan Navy’s Annual Safety Review for the year 2012 held at Bahria Auditorium. The Pakistan Navy conducts the safety review every year. Addressing the participants, Sandila expressed his satisfaction over the positive change of enhanced safety culture within the Pakistan Navy. “Safety and operational preparedness complement each other in the optimum execution of naval operations. We cannot afford to put the precious lives to harm and lose costly equipment by ignoring safety rules,” he said. The naval chief said safety measures should be adopted as a habit so that the future generations take safety as a by-product of good performance. “We are a developing country and the nation is spending a significant amount of its resources to support the armed forces, so we must be mindful to this fact and avoid any lost or waste of equipment in our daily work,” Sandila stressed.

Pakistan Army to Deploy 70,000 Troops for Election Security

Pakistan Army has started deployment of 70,000 troops for election-related duties that include security and maintenance of peace and order, the military spokesman said Thursday. Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa told a press conference in Rawalpindi that the armed forces have been called upon to act in aid of the civil power under constitutional provisions, reported Xinhua. The director-general of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said responsibilities assigned to the army include provision of security for printing presses where ballot papers are being printed; safe transportation of ballot papers and election material to election officers and polling stations and maintenance of law and order. He said printing of ballot papers has been continuing since April 19 and troops are guarding premises of the printing presses concerned. Deployment of army in the restive southwestern Balochistan province would be completed by Thursday night while deployment in southern Sindh including its capital Karachi would begin on Friday, added Bajwa. Movement of troops for deployment in Punjab would begin Friday while deployment in the violence-hit northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is underway and would be completed soon. Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani’s name appeared in the list of 500 most powerful people in the world published by the Foreign Policy (FP) Magazine’s May/June 2013 issue. The individuals included in the FP Power Map come from different professions and industries. The magazine claims to using a “list of lists” approach to put the rankings together. In 2012, General Kayani was ranked at 28 in the Forbes World’s Most Powerful People list. Director General of the Inter Services Intelligence Lieutenant General Zaheer-ul-Islam was ranked 52. The said list, along Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women list, The Wall Street Journal, the Fortune Global 500 and Global Journal Top 100 NGOs are some of the sources used to draft the FP list, in which General Kayani is listed as the only Pakistani. The list also includes Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Burmese Leader Aung San Suu Kyi, United National Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Indian National Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
